A shock finalist last year having never previously been beyond the fourth round of any Grand Slam, Bartoli has shown little sign since of recapturing the form which carried her past Justine Henin and into a final with Venus Williams. She lost in the first round in both Melbourne and Paris this year and has not been playing well. However, Bartoli, who plays two-handed on both sides, enjoyed a good run at the Eastbourne warm-up event to rekindle hopes of another Wimbledon to remember.
